My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Luke 1:47
My dear church family,
I am Pastor Sophia. Let me begin with a small confession—one I suspect some of you may understand all too well. Every Advent season, I tell myself, “This year, I will be calm, reflective, and prayerful.” And then… the to-do list grows legs and starts chasing me around the house. Services to prepare, hospital visits, meetings, grocery runs—and of course, the eternal mystery of why my reading glasses and phone disappear even when I haven’t moved from my chair.
In all that doing, I sometimes forget the most important part of Advent: the grace of simply being in God’s presence. When I finally sat down and let my heart breathe God reminded me gently, “Joy doesn’t come from what you finish. Joy comes from Me.” That whisper of grace brought me back to this Sunday’s Scriptures.
Isaiah declares with bold confidence: “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God.” —Isaiah 61:10 And Mary sings with quiet courage: “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” —Luke 1:47 Neither says that life was smooth. In fact, both speak of joy while standing in complicated, uncertain seasons. Their joy didn’t come from circumstances. Their joy came from God’s grace breaking into their lives. That gives me hope that joy is not something we must perform or pretend. Joy is something God places in us when we lift our eyes long enough to notice His presence.
Dear friend in Christ, I know some of you are carrying heavy stories into this season—loss, illness, waiting, uncertainty. Others are overwhelmed with schedules, tasks, and family responsibilities. Wherever you are, I pray that you will feel God’s tender invitation: “Come to Me. Let Me give you a joy that stays. “This is the joy Isaiah knew. This is the joy Mary carried. This is the joy God longs to give you.
As we worship this Sunday, come as you are—busy, tired, hopeful, grieving, joyful, or somewhere in between. There is room for all of it. I promise: if you bring even a small openness to God, God will meet you with His grace. Joy grows quickly in our hearts.
I am so grateful to walk this Advent journey with you.
With warmest love and the joy of Christ,
Sophia (Seung Hae) Yoo-Hess
